Jere Van Dyk is a journalist and author who has focused much of his writing on far-away, mostly dangerous places, particularly Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In college, he was on the U.S.

Pan American Track and Field Team, in the 800 meters. In 1970, while in the U.S. Army, he won the world military track and field championships in the 1500 meters, and later was on the U.S. National Team and carried the American flag in the closing ceremonies of the U.S.
